In recent years, mathematical models have been widely applied to simulate the hydrodynamic and water quality of Hong Kong waters and to assess the short-term and long-term impacts of development. ![]() Together with the rapid economic development and increase in population of neighbouring cities around the Pearl River Delta, the effect of degradation of water quality on the complex ecological system in the region is a concern. Hong Kong's growing population not only poses a need for new land but also increases pollution loads entering coastal waters. More recently reclamation has extended to the New Territories and Lantau Island. In the past, most of the reclamation was carried out in or near Victoria Harbour. There is an increasing demand for new land for residential and commercial developments and for relieving traffic congestion. Hong Kong is a densely populated coastal city with many large-scale infrastructure developments to support its economic growth. ![]()
